Turkmenistan’s agencies and UNFPA summarize the year’s work
On 4 December in Ashgabat, a joint meeting of UNFPA and relevant government agencies of Turkmenistan was held in the conference hall of the Ýyldyz Hotel, dedicated to reviewing the work carried out in 2025.
The meeting was attended by K. Goshliyev, Head of the UNFPA Turkmenistan Country Office, as well as representatives of the Mejlis, the Institute of State, Law and Democracy, the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry, the State Committee on Statistics, the State Committee for Physical Culture and Sports, and the National Red Crescent Society.
The review covered information on progress toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the areas of reproductive health, gender equality, the rights of married women and the younger generation, as well as issues of demographic development. The results of the implementation of joint action programs were summarized and prospective plans were identified. In particular, an evaluation was given of the outcomes of programs and strategies aimed at improving the living conditions and quality of life of women and youth.
In this context, L. Allayarova, a representative of the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan, noted the positive dynamics in the development of the relevant sector through the active use of global best practices. The high effectiveness of engaging international consultants to update standards and methodologies was confirmed. Cooperation with the Office of the Ombudsperson, the Institute of State, Law and Democracy, and the Ministry of Justice has notably advanced. Capacity at the local level has been strengthened, and systematic training has been carried out to ensure sustainable improvement in the quality of medical services. In addition, a mobile application for obstetricians-gynecologists has been developed to provide emergency assistance to women.
In his report, B. Orazov, a representative of the Institute of State, Law and Democracy, emphasized that Turkmenistan is implementing gender-oriented policies on a programmatic basis, with international norms being incorporated into national legislation. In cooperation with international organizations, thematic programs are being implemented to ensure gender equality related to the achievement of the SDGs by 2030.
B. Orazov reported that, along with fulfilling accepted international obligations and agreements, Turkmenistan is conducting a number of targeted activities. Among these are the operation of services supporting families—providing hotline assistance, psychological counseling, and social support—implementation of programs covering various areas, counseling for young couples, and the involvement of men in promoting gender equality in sports schools and military institutions.
B. Annamukhamedova, a representative of the State Committee on Statistics, spoke about the results of work carried out over the five-year period (2021–2025). Among the activities mentioned were the successful population and housing census with inclusive data collection in 2022, the advancement of education in the field of demography to build national capacity, and advisory identification of strategic directions and challenges in the area of demographic sustainability.
Meanwhile, key areas of partnership within the UNFPA program in Turkmenistan for the period 2026–2030 were presented on the margins of the meeting.
