Strategy of peace: neutrality of Turkmenistan shapes a new global agenda
In his New Year's address to the Turkmen people, President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov emphasised that in 2025, at our country's initiative, the United Nations General Assembly adopted by consensus the Resolution «Permanent neutrality of Turkmenistan». This event once again demonstrated the consistency of our neutrality policy.
To mark the «International year of peace and trust» and the 30th anniversary of permanent neutrality of Turkmenistan, numerous international events were organised. The highlight of this glorious year was the International Forum, held at a high level to mark International neutrality day. Following this large-scale event, the Ashgabat Declaration was adopted, and the Forum significantly enhanced standing of our country as a peace-loving state, the President stated.
In this way, independent, neutral Turkmenistan has once again become a platform for large-scale political and diplomatic work, and the national foreign policy philosophy has demonstrated concrete results in the form of international legal acts.
2025 marked a period of practical consolidation of proposals of our country at the highest international level. At the initiative of Turkmenistan, the UN General Assembly unanimously adopted a number of key documents. Of particular historical significance are the resolutions of 15th of December, 2025: «The Key role of reliable and stable energy connectivity for sustainable development» and «The UN Decade of sustainable transport (2026–2035)».
The first document aims to build reliable and stable energy networks as a guarantee of sustainable development, while the second aims to ensure regional and global transport connectivity by ensuring equal consideration of the interests of all member states. At the same time, these historic decisions lay the long-term political and legal foundation for economic development.
The policy of Turkmenistan as a responsible UN member is based on a trinity of principles: neutrality, peace, and trust. Over the past year, significant work has been carried out to promote this model. Today, the international community views Turkmen neutrality not just as a status, but as a key factor in regional security and sustainable development.
At a meeting with representatives of the diplomatic corps in December 2025, head of MFA R. Meredov noted that Turkmenistan has demonstrated its willingness to use its status in the interests of all humanity.
The potential of neutrality in modern politics has begun to unfold. Neutrality has a bright future. It is intended to become an essential political and legal instrument for bridging positions and taking into account the interests of all parties in international disputes, R. Meredov emphasised.
The results of 2025 – the «International year of peace and trust» – once again confirmed that the neutrality of Turkmenistan remains an unwavering guide for domestic development and the main contribution of country to the culture of global political dialogue. Combining loyalty to tradition and innovative approaches in energy and logistics, Turkmenistan continues to confidently follow the path of creation and international partnership.
