THE MEETING OF THE HEADS OF PARLIAMENTS STARTED IN ASHGABAT

On April 28, 2021, the meeting of the heads of the Parliaments “The Role of Parliamentarians in Strengthening International Peace and Trust” was held at the premises of the Mejlis (Parliament) of the National Council of Turkmenistan in videoconferencing format. 
The heads of the highest representative and legislative bodies of 15 countries of the world took part in the forum.
Opening the meeting, the Chairwoman of the Mejlis (Parliament) of the National Council of Turkmenistan Gulshat Mammedova expressed gratitude to all colleagues for active participation to the forum, which is a confirmation of the parties’ commitment to development and strengthening of mutually beneficial cooperation with Turkmenistan.
In her speech the Chairperson of the Mejlis highlighted the efforts of the country, directed for the establishment of universal peace and friendship, which is confirmed by the peace-loving initiatives of Turkmenistan. It was also stated the timeliness of proclamation by the UN General Assembly on the initiative of Turkmen side of 2021 as the International Year of Peace and Trust. The given step promotes strengthening of mutual understanding and development of confidential relations in international affairs.
It was underlined the timeliness of constitutional reforms, carried out in the country and which are the evidence of the commitment of Turkmenistan to the universally recognized democratic values and international cooperation. As a result of the reforms carried out in the general structure of the country’s legislative bodies, today a bicameral parliamentary system called the National Council, which consists of the Khalk Maslakhaty and the Mejlis, has begun to function successfully. 
G.Mammedova highlighted the significance of the “International Day of Parliamentarism”, established on the basis of the relevant UN Resolution which comprehensively promotes the activation of parliamentary diplomacy and contributes to the growth of mutually beneficial contacts between the Parliaments of the countries of the world. 
At the end of the meeting of the heads of the Parliaments “The Role of Parliamentarians in Strengthening International Peace and Trust”, the Final Document was adopted.
